The D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router is a draft 802.11n compliant device that delivers up to 14x faster speeds and 6x farther range than 802.11g while staying backward compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b devices. Connect the Xtreme N Gigabit Router to a cable or DSL modem and provide high-speed Internet access to multiple computers, game consoles, and media players. Create a secure wireless network to share photos, files, music, videos, printers, and network storage.
With some routers, all wired and wireless traffic, including VoIP, Video Streaming, Online Gaming, and Web browsing are mixed together into a single data stream. By handling data this way, applications like video streaming could pause or delay. With D-Link's Intelligent QoS Technology, wired and wireless traffic is analyzed and separated into multiple data streams. These streams are then categorized by sensitivity to delay, so applications like VoIP, Video Streaming, and Online Gaming are given priority over Web browsing. Initially the speed drops from 20Mb/S down to about 16Mb/S. As time goes on it gets slower and slower, eventually ratcheting down to dial-up speeds (~50Kb/S).
Bypass the router completely (i.e. plug directly into the cable modem) and the 20Mb/S throughput is still there. The problem is definitely the router.
A reboot of the router will get you back to reasonable performance for a while (although never what it should be). But it does not last for long.
Firmware updates haven't helped.

Works like a Charm
I bought this about a month ago. Works great with both windows and mac computers. It is speedy and reliable. It is definitely worth the money. 2008-10-12
Promise not met
This is the second one of this specific item (D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router) we've ordered that we've not been able to get to work with our system. Neither my son nor I could get either of the first or second one that we ordered to connect with our DSL after multiple attempts with both. Our previous router is DLink and I've been a fan of the brand, but this version didn't work for us. 2008-10-12
Worst. Router. Ever.
This router throttles my 20 megabit per second (Mb/S) cable modem connection significantly, and it gets worse over time until it is unusable.

Good while it last
My router went south in just a little over four months. Very famous DIR-655 symptom - dropped connection or no connection at all. It was a good device while it lasted... Had to go back to my trusty five years old Linksys. 2008-10-11
