This story sheds light on one of humanity's most powerful, classic traps--the trap of belonging to a particular societal and ideological structure at any cost, and having this exploited by the egos of others.
I recommend this book to anyone not only interested in a fascinating read about an unlikely heroine in a strange culture, but wanting the opportunity to dialog with their own inner being about just what they would or would not endure to fit in with their tribe, and what they would be willing to give up to find their true Self. Carolyn Jessop's triumphant story is a powerful one, and she is an amazing model for trusting and following your inner guidance no matter the perceived cost.

Carolyn Jessop recounts her life in this cult and it is hard to put the book down. I think because it is happening right now in our country and not stopped; it is the saddest account I've ever read. Women being treated worse than animals and then thanking their husband for that treatment!
I think the only way I was able to finish reading this book and HAD to finish it was so I could read that Carolyn escaped this torturous life.
The book continues to haunt me.

Couldn't put it down
I lost sleep over this one because, for one thing, it was so riveting, I couldn't put it down to turn out the light; and for another, it is a surreal and disturbing story, even if there is no doubt in my mind that it is a reasonably accurate recounting of events taking place over several decades in a woman's life.

Very interesting.
I am still reading this book and am finding it very interesting due to the subject matter. Carolyn Jessop lets us in on what it was like living in Warren Jeffs' "cult" and being a plural wife. For anyone interested in polygamy out of sheer curiosity, this is a great book. 2008-08-12

Haunting
Escape is an extremely disturbing account of Carolyn Jessop's life as the fourth wife to a monster. This is a chilling account of how evil polygamous marriages are. That every last polygamous wife isn't a nut case is an absolute miracle.

An Important Book
This is the tale of a young woman who is born into the FLDS and against all odds escapes with her children. It is a story that everyone should read because many people are not aware some of these truly horrific things are occurring in America. It is an enlightening book that made me want to take a stand. 2008-08-08

Painful to read but worth it.
As a mother, and an independent and happily married woman, I found it very difficult to read. The abuse of children by the other mothers, the abuse by husband and "sister wives", the abuse by parents, cousins, uncles etc. was sometimes more than I could read. And Jessop was not very descriptive and purposefully vague of the horrors she could only hint at. Her awakening comes when "evil doers" on the outside show her and her children more compassion and tenderness than her own family and community. Her child's cancer is blamed on her "rebellious nature". She firmly believed in FLDS but came to see the monster her husband and Warren Jeffs was making of what her beautiful faith should have been (or was promised to be). See it is never clear if Jessop loses faith altogether or loses faith in the FLDS leaders. But her courage, her reserve of strength, and her determination was an inspiration. But I still found it difficult to live her life through her eyes (veiled as she made it for the reader). 2008-08-04
