Customer Reviews:

2009 Norton Security was a surprise lease
I haven't used the 2010 version, but I owned the 2009 Norton Internet Security, pretty much without any problems. In previous years, when the subscription time expired after one year, the software would simply stop updating the definitions, and then nag you to purchase more. The 2009 version surprised me by shutting down completely at expiration, leaving me with no protection whatsoever, not even port blocking. Additionally, the Symantec link to subscribe for an additional year offered a price almost 2x higher than Amazon.

I understand the need for continuing revenue to develop new virus checking, discover new threats, etc.., but I do not like this new software leasing model. When I purchase software I expect to continue to own the functionality I paid for. I will not purchase software from Symantec again.

Causes internet access problems
This software appears to have powerful security tools, but it is confusing to operate with at least 30 different "on-off" options in the software, but many of the options are not well explained so it is difficult to understand what a particular function is for, and what the consequence is of turning it off.

But the real problem with this software is it imposes a sometimes large overhead on the operating system, and causes random system hangs, sometimes for a fraction of a second, and sometimes causing a lockup of some functions or windows. The dealbreaker for me came when this software stopped internet access... the computer reported that a connection to the local router was OK, and the internet was OK, but no functions on the internet were available. It took a lot of troubleshooting to finally figure our that this software was causing the problem, and once this software was disabled and the computer cold booted... then finally the problem was solved.

I am running an HP that is several months old, with Windows 7, that has been updated with all current Microsoft patches. I kept Norton fully updated as well. I suspect that one of the wide variety of protection features that the software has conflicted with a Windows update.

The irritating thing with this software is that there was no warning that the software was causing problems, resulting in a lot of time messing with drivers, etc., until finally the culprit was discovered.

Good Price & Good Product
Other reviewer have had to contact Norton to get updated products or they have had other problems. I am here to tell you that no such problems exited for me when I ordered this from Amazon.com. Good shipping method (packing) and also had earlier than expected delivery. I am a solid Amazon customer.

Norton internet product is a must.
I have a computer programmer for a husband and we wouldn't be with out this product. But you must have internet version to protect your computers. This is worth the extra money. There are cheaper versions of Norton, but some are not as safe as this one. A person wouldn't leave their doors unlocked, so why would a person leave their computers with out securty.

Good with one very serious flaw
I have been using Norton Internet Security (NIS) for about one year now and generally like the program. I won't repeat what others have said about it - there are many good reviews - but I want to draw attention to an apparent security flaw with the software.

When you connect to a new Ethernet (wired) network the NIS firewall automatically configures itself to its "shared" setting which is inappropriate in many cases. For example if you are staying in a hotel and plug into their network, NIS sets the firewall to "shared". But it is hard to imagine how this would be a desirable setting since the other computers on this network are all unknown to you. A better approach would be to default the trust level to "restricted" or to pop up a window asking what trust level you want. Once you are connected to the new network you can manually change the trust level to "restricted" but this leaves your computer open to attack for a period of time.

This may sound like a trivial complaint, but I have stayed at hotels in China where when you plug into their networks you get hundreds of attacks on your computer per minute (I was using some different firewall program then that allowed me to see this in real time). I don't know if this is such a problem here in the US but I would rather the firewall (network trust level) always start off in its highest security state or at least give me the opportunity to set a default that I want and not be forced to take the default that is built in now and that leaves me exposed.
