Review from a woman's heart
I have to disagree with the "wimpy" comment for the Amazon review. Ted Neeley is not "wimpy" in the role of Jesus. To borrow a line from the movie the reviewer does not "understand what power is".

We were able to see Mr. Neeley perform JCS live recently and he's still amazing at 64, even better than the movie performance. He has a rare gift and I hope his light continues to shine on stage for many years to come.

A Masterful Story of The Superstar
A masterful movie telling the story of Jesus in a different light from the gospels. Christian and non-Christian alike, if one considers the movie as art and not just a story, will find themselves examining their own perception of Jesus. From the garden of Gethsemane to Judas' and Mary Magdelene's own questions, you get a new window into what might have happened beyond the sometimes simplified story of his life in the Bible.

Oh, and the music is fantastic! As other reviewers have stated Neely's voice may not be as powerful as others, per se, but I feel it is perfect for the part. His range and passion in singing is incredible.

Life Changing
After over 300 reviews there's nothing I could add technically to sway anybody one way or the other on this film. So I'll just say that personally speaking, I saw this movie in the theatre in 1973 and my life was forever changed. I probably have seen it at least a dozen times and will see it at least a few more before I die. I can't think of any other film I can say that about.

I almost died of shock a few years back while watching reruns of the old Ed Sullivan Show and saw a band called The Teddy Nealy Five! Yes it was a short haired "Jesus" singing the standard 'Going Out Of My Head' or something just as preposterous. The performance pretty much sucked! It kind of "humanized" the actor for me.

GREAT MOVIE!!!
Enjoyed this movie very much. Ted Neely made a wonderful Jesus Christ. The soundtrack was moving and awesome. Really loved the part of Herrod and the song Jesus sang in the Garden. 5 stars all the way :D

Well Worth It
I first saw Jesus Christ Superstar when it was released in the mid 1970's. Being a Catholic I was skeptical of the Passion being done in a Rock Musical style. However, what I found was it was a wonderful way in which to have those who are not interest in religion or the history of the Passion to become aware of what a remarkable story it truly is. Not only the scenery but the wonderful music, the closeness to the truth that is contained and even with some straying for a sign of the time, it was and is one of my very favorites to watch during the Lenten Season of Easter. I highly recommend this dvd for the entire family.
